Does Hell Burn Forever?
Does eternal punishment require eternal conscious punishing?
Scripture teaches a real final judgment and irreversible destruction of the wicked. Biblical images include death, destruction, consuming fire, ashes, perishing, and the second death. “Eternal” can describe the permanence of the result. The site therefore presents conditional immortality: only those who receive eternal life in Christ live forever.
Reformation principle. God’s justice is real, final, and consistent with the biblical teaching that the wages of sin is death.
Read the biblical evidence
- Romans 6:23The wages of sin is death. Eternal life is God’s gift.
- Malachi 4:1–3The wicked are compared to stubble and ultimately ashes.
- Matthew 10:28God can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
- Revelation 20:14–15The lake of fire is called the second death.
- John 3:16The alternatives are perishing and everlasting life.
Historical context
Roman Catholic teaching affirms the eternity of hell and describes the souls of those who die in mortal sin as suffering the punishments of hell immediately after death. Many Protestant traditions teach eternal conscious torment as well.
Examine the challenge
Texts about “eternal fire,” “unquenchable fire,” and “torment day and night” are serious evidence used for eternal conscious torment. The interpretive question is whether they describe endless process or irreversible judgment within apocalyptic imagery.
