The 95 Theses: What Was Being Protested?
What did Luther actually challenge in 1517?
The theses concentrated on repentance, indulgences, the spiritual claims attached to them, the limits of papal power, and the danger of giving Christians false confidence. Thesis 62 called the gospel the true treasure of the church. The document did not yet contain every conviction later associated with Protestantism, but it placed a reforming question on the table: does church practice agree with the gospel?
Reformation principle. A faithful protest must accurately represent what it is protesting.
Read the biblical evidence
- Romans 1:16–17The gospel reveals the righteousness of God by faith.
- 1 John 1:9Forgiveness rests in God’s faithfulness and justice when sins are confessed.
- 1 Timothy 2:5Christ is the one mediator between God and humanity.
Historical context
Current Roman Catholic teaching still includes indulgences. The Catechism defines an indulgence as remission of temporal punishment under prescribed conditions through the ministry of the Church.
Examine the challenge
Reconciliation among Christians is good and Jesus prayed for unity. The question is whether Christian unity can be separated from truth.

Should the Reformation be judged by whether institutions reconciled, or by whether disputed teachings were brought into harmony with Scripture?
- Reconciliation is enough
- Scriptural reform is the test
- Neither matters
