Why Did the Reformation Begin?
Can a church that carries the name of Christ still need reform?
The sixteenth-century Reformation began inside Western Christianity as a call to address abuses and teachings that reformers believed obscured the gospel. Luther did not begin in 1517 intending to found a new denomination. The controversy widened as questions about repentance, indulgences, forgiveness, papal authority, and finally the authority of Scripture became unavoidable.
Reformation principle. Reformation begins when believers are willing to test religious practice by the Word of God.

Historical context
The 95 Theses of 1517 were propositions for academic debate, focused especially on indulgences and repentance. They were the beginning of Luther’s conflict, not a complete statement of later Protestant theology.
Examine the challenge
Historic continuity can be evidence worth considering. The issue is whether continuity can overrule a clear biblical command.
If a religious practice is ancient and widely accepted, is that enough to make it biblical?
